Classic Interior Design & Styling

What is classic interior design?

Classic interior design is built on ideas that have outlasted every trend: balance, proportion and quality materials. It takes its cues from traditional European interiors, but our approach is lighter and more livable, suited to the way Sydney homes are lived in today.

Think tailored furniture, considered symmetry, rich but restrained colour and pieces that look better with age. Classic style suits all kinds of homes, from a Federation house in the Inner West or a Paddington terrace to a north shore family home. Our extensive inventory of classic furniture and decor means we can create the look in any of them, whether that’s a single formal living room or the entire home.

“Classic isn’t about making a home feel old. It’s about making it feel settled. Everything has a reason to be where it is, and nothing is fighting for attention. When a room looks like it’s always been that way, that’s when you know it works.”

The elements of a classic home:

PROPORTION & SYMMETRY

Classic interiors start with order. Paired lamps, matching armchairs and a sofa centred on the fireplace or window give a room its calm, composed feel. We use symmetry to set the structure, then introduce one curved or sculptural piece so the space feels collected rather than staged.

COLOUR

A classic colour scheme is grounded in warm neutrals: ivory, soft greige, putty and stone. Deeper accents give the room depth, such as navy, olive, charcoal and tobacco. These tones sit easily alongside cornices, skirting and panelling, and let the furniture and art take the lead.

MATERIALS & FINISHES

Quality is non-negotiable in a classic interior. Walnut and oak, marble, aged brass, leather, wool and velvet all appear regularly in our classic schemes. We layer them for texture, with mohair or velvet upholstery against panelled walls, veined stone and wool rugs, adding richness without visual noise. These are materials that develop character over time, so a well-loved piece only gets better.

DETAIL

Classic style shows itself in the details. A turned timber leg, a pleated lampshade, piped upholstery, a framed mirror above the mantel. On their own, each is small. Together, they give a room its depth and polish. We also look for architectural features like panelling, archways and ceiling roses, and design around them instead of covering them up.

ARTWORK & OBJECTS

Framed prints, oil paintings, antique-style accessories and a well-stocked bookshelf bring personality to a classic home. We like to mix a few vintage-inspired pieces with newer furniture, which keeps the room from feeling like a showroom or a museum.

How we bring modern and traditional decor together, room by room.

the entrance

First impressions matter in a classic home. A console table, a statement piece of art and a pair of lamps create a welcoming, composed entry. It sets the tone before guests have even reached the living room.

the living room

A classic living room is arranged for conversation. We often anchor the space with a tailored sofa facing a pair of armchairs, a timber or marble coffee table between them and a wool rug underneath. Table lamps, a few hardcover books and fresh flowers complete a room that feels both elegant and comfortable.

the dining room

In classic style, the dining room is a destination, not just somewhere to eat. A timber dining table, upholstered or carved dining chairs and a chandelier or traditional pendant create a sense of occasion. A sideboard with lamps and artwork above it gives the room a focal point when the table is empty.

the study

A classic study should feel calm, focused and quietly elegant. We start with tailored furniture and good proportions, positioning the desk to make the most of natural light. From there, we layer in timeless details: a traditional desk lamp, an upholstered chair for comfort, panelled or crisp joinery and a few books and objects that make the space feel personal. The goal is a room you genuinely look forward to working in.

the bedroom

Classic bedrooms are layered and restful. An upholstered bedhead, crisp bedding with a quilted throw, matching bedside tables and lamps, and lined curtains that fall to the floor create a sense of luxury that never feels overdone.

frequently asked questions

Considering a classic interior? These are the questions we hear most often.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSIC AND TRADITIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN?

The two are closely related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. Traditional design tends to follow a specific period more strictly, with heavier fabrics, ornate furniture and more decoration. Classic style takes the same principles of symmetry, quality and craftsmanship and presents them in a cleaner, lighter way that suits modern living.

WHY IS CLASSIC STYLE SO POPULAR ON SYDNEY’S NORTH SHORE?

Suburbs like Killara, Pymble, Turramurra, Wahroonga and St Ives are home to many of Sydney’s finest period houses, with established gardens, wide hallways and rooms built for entertaining. Classic interiors complement that architecture instead of competing with it, so the furniture and finishes feel as though they’ve always belonged to the house.

CAN YOU MIX CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE?

Yes, and it’s often what makes a room feel personal. The key is a consistent palette and a common thread, such as a timber tone or metal finish that repeats throughout the space. A contemporary sofa beside an antique side table, or modern art above a period fireplace, gives a classic room a sense of life. The same approach works in newer homes and apartments. Classic furniture, lighting and materials bring warmth and character to simpler architecture, creating a modern classic look that feels fresh rather than formal.

WHAT ARE THE BEST COLOURS FOR A CLASSIC INTERIOR?

Warm whites, creams and soft greige make a reliable base, especially in rooms with detailed cornices or panelling. For more depth, deep greens, navy and warm browns work beautifully in studies, dining rooms and powder rooms. As with any scheme, test samples at different times of day, because natural light in Sydney homes can shift a colour noticeably.

IS CLASSIC STYLE A GOOD CHOICE FOR SELLING A HOME?

Classic styling has broad appeal, which makes it a strong option for heritage and family homes in particular. It photographs well and helps buyers picture themselves living in the space. For property styling, we’ll always tailor the scheme to suit the home and the types of buyers it’s likely to attract.
